Dear Shver, I know you’re a very friendly person and enjoy staying in shul to schmooze after davening. But I beg you, can Leil Seder please be different?
Why do you come home 30 minutes after Maariv, then start looking for your wine and take your time deciding which bottle to use? Then there’s another 10 minutes figuring out the seating and where the pillows are. After that, you send one of the boys to retrieve your matzah from the basement…
Precious Shver, it’s usually close to an hour before we actually begin Kiddush. The kids have prepared for weeks for this special night, and as it clearly says in halacha, one should start the Seder immediately after shul so the children don’t get sleepy and we can properly fulfill the mitzvah of telling the story of the Exodus.
Every year, you start panicking when you see we’re getting close to chatzos. How about following the earlier halacha in Shulchan Aruch, which states that the table should be fully set before Yom Tov so the family can begin the Seder without delay?
Hoping for a more pleasant Seder this year,
Your eidem
