Seven Charged in Vandalism of Jewish Feminist Icon’s Statue; Eighth Suspect on the Run

Mar 30, 2026·2 min read

Australia’s Victoria Police arrested seven women and charged them with defacing the statue of Jewish feminist Zelda D’Aprano, an Australian feminist activist and icon who died in 2018. An eighth woman is still at large. The statue is located outside the Victorian Trades Hall.

According to a police statement, “Seven women have been charged after allegedly damaging the statue of Zelda D’Aprano outside the Victorian Trades Hall earlier this month.”

“It’s alleged the women — who are all part of an activist group — attended Victoria Street at approximately 11 a.m. with umbrellas and red spray paint,” the statement continued.

The statement said that police would allege the women attempted to conceal their identities by using umbrellas and by changing their clothes and then sprayed red spray paint on the statue and surrounding tiles. Police said the vandalism occurred earlier this month, on March 6.

According to the statement, when staff members approached the women, they responded aggressively before leaving. The women range in age from 34 to 71.

“All have been charged with a range of offences including criminal damage, behaving in a riotous manner in a public place, marking graffiti on a residence without consent, recklessly damaging part of a registered place without a permit and refusing to leave scheduled public place after a warning,” police said.

In addition to the eighth woman, police are searching for three accomplices. On March 25, the group allegedly stole a vehicle and drove it threateningly at a group of Jews in Melbourne, according to leaders from the Jewish community.

Robert Gregory, CEO of the Australian Jewish Association, said in an interview, “Australian Jews should be able to walk down the street without being abused, yet for many, that’s no longer the reality.”

These photos from a post on X purport to show the arrests of some of the woman involved in defacing a statue on March 6, 2026.
