Iran Imposes Death Penalty for Collaboration as Arrests Surge
The Iranian government passed a law that applies the death penalty and the seizure of all assets to anyone convicted of collaborating with “hostile states,” according to an Iranian judiciary spokesperson. The law does not appear to differ much from previous Iranian actions, where people are executed on the flimsiest of evidence.
Even sharing photos and videos online that could be construed as aiding the enemy will count toward a conviction, the spokesperson said. Thus far, Iranian authorities have arrested about 1,000 people on suspicion of collaborating with enemy governments, posting anti-government material online and filming sensitive locations.
The United States and Israel mounted a joint military campaign against Iran to degrade its ballistic missile capabilities, destroy its nuclear weapons program and weaken the regime to create the conditions for the Iranian people to topple it.
Iran retaliated not only by striking indiscriminately at civilian population centers in Israel, at times launching internationally banned cluster bombs, but also by striking Arab states across the Gulf.
