Report: Gulf Allies Urge U.S. to Intensify Iran Fight as Trump Eyes Exit

Mar 31, 2026·2 min read

According to a media report Tuesday, Gulf states are privately pressuring the Trump administration to escalate the war with Iran, contrary to his stated wish to wind down operations and pull out, following his timetable of four to six weeks, even if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf allies do not believe the month-long strikes have weakened Iran enough to neutralize the threat. While they are pushing for boots on the ground, Qatar and Oman, the usual suspects, are urging President Donald Trump to pursue a diplomatic solution.

Top officials from Gulf states pushing for escalation have said that any deal with Iran must include ending its nuclear and ballistic missile program and support for its proxy terror groups across the region, despite Tehran’s threat to target critical infrastructure in retaliation.

Trump is meanwhile considering demanding that Arab states pay for the war effort as they did in the 1990-1991 Persian Gulf War, when Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates underwrote the cost of that military campaign. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that Trump “would be quite interested” in repeating history in this case.

Israel is working toward building alliances with Gulf countries who view Iran as a common threat. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told reporters Tuesday that Israel is “forming alliances with Arab countries that are talking about fighting alongside us.”

“In the past, I had secret conversations with Arab leaders,” he said. “I told them that once Iran is able, it will conquer you and bring down your kingdoms. Back then, they didn’t really internalize this — today, they understand.”
