Israel Targets Iran’s Mahshahr Petrochemical Hub in Major Strike on Ballistic Missile Supply Chain

Apr 4, 2026·3 min read

Israel widened its campaign inside Iran by striking petrochemical infrastructure in Mahshahr, in southwestern Khuzestan Province, with the IDF saying the complex was a key source of chemical materials used for explosives, ballistic missiles and other weapons. The military said one of the targets was among the regime’s two central facilities for producing a critical ballistic missile component.

The hit marks a notable escalation in how Israel is pressuring Tehran. This was not presented as another strike on a launcher, air-defense battery or storage depot alone. Israeli reporting said the attack was aimed at a site tied directly to the missile supply chain, while the IDF said the strike halted production of the relevant chemical materials and was expected to inflict major financial damage as well. Reuters separately reported that Israel is preparing possible attacks on additional Iranian energy facilities, pending a U.S. green light, suggesting Mahshahr may be part of a broader move toward sustained economic pressure on the regime’s war machine.

Iranian media described multiple blasts across the Mahshahr Special Petrochemical Zone and nearby industrial sites, with Tasnim naming the Fajr 1 and 2, Rejal and Amir Kabir plants among those hit. Tasnim also reported follow-on strikes near Bandar-e Imam Khomeini and said the industrial zone was evacuated after the attacks, while authorities said any released hazardous material did not pose an immediate threat to nearby cities.

The casualty picture remains unsettled. Initial Iranian reporting cited by Tasnim said five people were wounded. Later Iranian state-linked reporting cited by AP, AFP and Anadolu said at least five people were killed and around 170 were injured, with most of the wounded reportedly treated and released. That gap matters, and for now the latest verified status is that the operational details of the strike are clear, but the human toll is still being reported inconsistently across Iranian-linked outlets.

Mahshahr is one of Iran’s most important petrochemical hubs, which means damage there can hit both industrial feedstock and export-linked revenue at the same time. In practice, that puts more pressure on Tehran’s ability to keep financing and supplying missile production as Israel tries to move from attrition of launch capabilities toward deeper disruption of the regime’s strategic base. If further energy-site strikes follow, this attack may end up looking like a turning point rather than a one-off blow.
