IDF Says Hezbollah Exploits UNIFIL Sites for Attacks on Israel

Apr 5, 2026·2 min read

The IDF revealed Sunday that since the beginning of Operation Roaring Lion, Hezbollah has been using UNIFIL posts as cover to launch attacks against Israel.

UNIFIL, or the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, is a peacekeeping force the U.N. established in the 1970s to monitor the contentious border between Israel and Lebanon. It has, for the most part, been ineffective, allowing Hezbollah to grow in strength and numbers since that time.

The Israeli military said that since the beginning of the war, about 165 rockets launched by Hezbollah toward Israel have missed their mark and instead landed on or near UNIFIL locations. Hezbollah has been deliberately firing from these locations, using UNIFIL troops as human shields as they continue to imperil the lives of the U.N. peacekeepers during the past two months of fighting, according to the IDF, which added that it is working with UNIFIL forces in the region.

“The Hezbollah terrorist organization systematically violates international law and continues to operate while endangering international forces and harming UN personnel operating in the area,” the IDF said in a statement. “Throughout the targeted operational activity in southern Lebanon, the IDF is working to maintain coordination with UNIFIL forces in the area.”
