Hostage Horror: Survivor Says Hamas Assault Was Revenge for Sde Teiman Case

Apr 5, 2026·2 min read

In a radio interview, former Israeli hostage Bar Kupershtein recounted that his Hamas captor broke his leg, telling him it was revenge for the Sde Teiman affair, in which a Gazan terrorist was allegedly beaten while in detention. Ultimately, the soldiers charged in the case were cleared of wrongdoing.

IDF Military Advocate General Maj. Gen. Itay Offir announced March 12 the dismissal of the case, citing difficulties that arose from a leaked video that led to an investigation of the prosecution as well.

“They took Yosef Chaim Ohana and me and broke my leg,” he said. “They said that it was because of Netanyahu, Ben Gvir, because of Sde Teiman. At first, I didn’t understand what they were talking about, so they showed me the video.”

“They didn’t tell me much more, so I had no idea what Sde Teiman was meant to be,” he added. “The only thing they said was, ‘Next time we will kill you.'”

Kupershtein said he was grateful to be able to worry about different things now. For example, his car had recently been broken into, and his phone was stolen.

“I’m grateful that my problems now are a smashed window and a stolen phone,” he said.

“Last Passover, my dad had to write in the ‘Why is this night different than any other’ part of the Seder that it was different because I’ll be home,” he concluded. “I’m looking at life completely different.”
