New Jersey Drivers With Expiring Vehicle Inspections Receive Extension Due To Facility Closure

Apr 10, 2026·2 min read

New Jersey motorists across the state will have more time to get their vehicles inspected this spring and summer after the state Motor Vehicle Commission announced it is automatically extending hundreds of thousands of inspection sticker expiration dates in connection with the permanent closure of a major Newark inspection facility.

The Newark Inspection Station at will close this weekend to make way for a new, expanded and modernized agency. To ease the transition for affected drivers statewide, the MVC is pushing back expiration dates by three months for any valid inspection sticker set to expire between April and July 2026.

Under the extensions, stickers expiring in April will now be valid through July; May stickers through August; June stickers through September; and July stickers through October. The extensions are automatic — no action is required by vehicle owners.

The move affects motorists throughout New Jersey, as the Newark station serves drivers from across the region and its closure reduces the overall capacity of the state inspection network.

Drivers who wish to complete their inspections before their new deadline may do so at any of the state’s remaining inspection stations, or at any of more than 1,100 private inspection facilities operating statewide.
