Can Trump Keep His Promise to Israel After Brokering Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire?

Apr 16, 2026·2 min read

To get Israel on board with the hastily brokered ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, did President Donald Trump make a promise he may not be able to keep?

A senior Israeli official told The Jerusalem Post that, unlike the previous November 2024 ceasefire, this one will include American involvement to disarm Hezbollah.

But with the Iran war widely unpopular in the United States, how much more foreign entanglement will the American people tolerate? Perhaps not very much more.

The official said that as with the last time, Israel will be allowed to strike Hezbollah targets that pose a security threat.

Trump will lead efforts to disarm Hezbollah using American resources because he “wants this to happen, so this time the U.S. will be far more involved,” the official said.

Israel is in a much better position for a ceasefire this time around, he added. The IDF has destroyed massive amounts of Hezbollah infrastructure and munitions and is not budging from the areas it has already secured.

“Forces are deployed from Naqoura to Syria and will not withdraw,” the source said. “In addition, Iran is in a much weaker position in terms of its ability to support the organization’s recovery.”

One other thing in Israel’s favor: Hundreds of thousands of refugees from southern Lebanon will pressure the Lebanese government to press forward with negotiations, because — ceasefire or not — the region remains unsafe for them to return home.

The official also said that the ceasefire is not permanent. Israel will continue to act in its own security interests, whatever that takes — and now the Lebanese government must prove itself.

“This is currently a 10-day ceasefire,” he said. “For it to continue, the burden of proof lies with Lebanon and Hezbollah.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also offered reassurance, saying that Israel will maintain a 10-kilometer (6-mile) buffer zone into Lebanese territory.

“We have changed the balance of security,” Netanyahu said.

It remains to be seen what shape Trump’s promises will take — and whether the American people will allow it.
