Trump Says Weekend Talks Will Finalize Iran Deal, Including Surrender of Uranium for Funds and End to Terror Support

Conflicting statements from Washington and Tehran have cast doubt on the true status of nuclear negotiations, even as President Donald Trump said the two sides will meet this weekend to finalize a deal.

Trump told CBS News Friday that Iran has “agreed to everything,” including surrendering its enriched uranium stockpile and halting support for proxy terror groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas.

He said American personnel would travel to Iran to retrieve the nuclear material. “We’ll go down and get it with them, and then we’ll take it,” Trump said, adding it would be transported to the United States. In a separate interview with AFP, Trump declared there are “no sticking points at all” remaining. “We’re very close. Looks like it’s going to be very good for everybody,” he said, adding he is waiting to receive the agreement “in writing.”

Iranian officials offered a sharply different account. A senior Iranian official told Reuters on condition of anonymity that “significant differences” remain between the two sides, particularly on nuclear issues. “No agreement has been reached on the details of the nuclear issues,” the official said, warning that any claim to the contrary “is a misrepresentation of the situation.”

The contradictions extended to financial terms as well. Axios reported that negotiators are discussing a framework under which the U.S. would release $20 billion in frozen Iranian assets in exchange for Iran relinquishing its nuclear stockpile. Trump publicly rejected that framing, telling CBS, “No, we are not paying 10 cents,” and posting on social media that “no money will change hands.”

Gaps remain on other fronts as well. While Trump said the Strait of Hormuz is “already open,” Iranian officials maintain that keeping the critical shipping lane clear is contingent on U.S. adherence to ceasefire terms. Tehran is also demanding sanctions relief and war damage compensation. And while Washington is pressing for all nuclear material to be shipped out of the country, Iranian negotiators have thus far agreed only to “down-blend” the material inside Iran under international monitoring.
Talks are being mediated by Pakistan, with officials from Egypt, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia also expected to participate in a “quad” meeting this weekend.
