UK Chief Rabbi Sounds Alarm After 3rd Attack on Shul in One Week

Apr 19, 2026·2 min read

A wave of antisemitic attacks across London prompted an urgent warning from Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis, who says British Jewry is facing a dangerous moment unlike anything seen in recent years.

The warning came after a third attack in less than a week, with a synagogue in northwest London targeted in what was another attempted arson.

The latest incident occurred at the Kenton United Synagogue, where a device was thrown at the building overnight. While the fire did not fully ignite, it caused smoke damage and could have led to a far more serious tragedy had conditions been slightly different. This attack follows two similar attacks just days earlier, one in Finchley and another in Hendon, creating a clear and troubling pattern of targeting Jewish buildings.

Last night yet another synagogue, this time in Kenton, was targeted in a cowardly arson attack. It follows the attack in Finchley on Wednesday and the attempted attack on what was the Jewish Futures building in Hendon on Friday night, making three Jewish sites attacked in London…

Rabbi Mirvis issued a powerful statement, describing the situation as a “sustained campaign of intimidation and violence”. He stressed that these incidents cannot be dismissed as random acts of vandalism, but must be seen as part of a rise in antisemitism that has intensified since the outbreak of war in Israel.

Police launched a counterterrorism investigation into the attacks, with specialist units involved. Police are reviewing surveillance footage and working to identify suspects. There are concerns that the incidents are coordinated or inspired by extremists.

Security has been increased across London’s Jewish neighborhoods, with additional patrols stationed near shuls, schools, and other community centers.

Political leaders across the UK condemned the attacks, but for the Jewish community, words are just not enough.
