BUSTED! DOJ Nabs Iranian Green Card Holder in Alleged Weapons Scheme

Apr 19, 2026·2 min read

She became a lawful permanent resident of the United States in 2016 — and then turned around and spat on the country that gave her a home.

Shamim Mafi, a 44-year-old Iranian national who lives in Los Angeles, was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport Saturday night, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, on suspicion of trafficking weapons for the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The glamorous businesswoman, who posted photos of herself in a $100,000 convertible, was found to possess a suitcase full of cash. She told investigators that she is “more useful to Iranian spies in Tehran than in the United States.”

Bill Essayli, first assistant U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, said that she is charged with “brokering the sale of drones, bombs, bomb fuses and millions of rounds of ammunition manufactured by Iran and sold to Sudan.”

“If convicted, she faces a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison,” he added, reminding the public that Mafi “is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.”

Court records show that as recently as last year, she used an Oman-registered company called Atlas International Business to cut weapons deals.

The green card holder’s court appearance in a U.S. District Court in Los Angeles is scheduled for Monday afternoon.

The arrest was like a scene straight out of a spy movie — except that we, the people of the United States, brought her in and gave her a permanent home here. The question is, why exactly?
