Should New Jersey Allow Speed Cameras to Help Prevent Accidents?
It’s a debate that has come up before here on TLS and one that continues to spark strong opinions on both sides.
New Jersey currently does not allow speed cameras, aside from ongoing discussions about possibly introducing them in limited settings such as school zones, as reported on TLS.
But as serious accidents continue to occur across the state – particularly in heavily populated areas like Lakewood – some are beginning to ask whether it’s time to reconsider that stance more broadly.
It’s no secret that Lakewood has seen its share of serious and, at times, tragic accidents. In many cases, speed has been a contributing factor.
While enforcement efforts by local police remain ongoing, the reality is that officers cannot be everywhere at all times. This has led some to argue that additional tools may be necessary to help deter dangerous driving behaviors.
Supporters point to neighboring New York as an example. There, speed cameras have been widely implemented, particularly in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic. The program has been credited with reducing speeding and improving overall safety. Importantly, violations issued through these cameras do not carry points on a driver’s license, which proponents say makes the system more about deterrence than punishment.
Still, the idea remains controversial.
Critics raise concerns about privacy, government overreach, and the potential for such systems to become revenue generators rather than safety tools. Others question whether cameras can fairly replace traditional enforcement by police officers.
TLS has previously raised this topic, and reader response made clear that opinions are deeply divided.
But with accidents continuing to occur – many of which could potentially be avoided if drivers adhered to posted speed limits – the question is being asked once again:
Is it time for New Jersey to expand its approach and allow speed cameras as a way to improve road safety?
Or do the concerns outweigh the potential benefits?
