Israeli Judo Star Hershko Strikes Gold Again at European Judo Championships

Apr 19, 2026·1 min read

Israeli judo champion Raz Hershko maintained her winning streak Sunday, winning the gold for the second time in her life at the European Judo Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, and winning a medal for the fifth time overall.

Hershko won the gold on the last day of the championships in the over 78 kg category, beating her opponent, France’s Lea Fontaine, in just 52 seconds. That makes her the third Israeli ever to win more than one gold medal at the European Judo Championships.

The last time Hershko competed was in April — she had to skip the June games due to the 12-day war with Iran.

Hershko also won a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the women’s over 78 kg weight class.

Two other Israelis won medals at the competition. Timna Nelson-Levy won the silver medal in the women’s under 57 kg category, and 18-year-old Izhak Ashpiz took the bronze medal in the under 60 kg category on the men’s side.

At 31, Nelson-Levy became the oldest Israeli female athlete to ever win a medal at the European Judo Championships — an interesting distinction.
