NYC Mayor Vetoes Jewish Safety Bill, Drawing Fury From Jewish Groups

Apr 24, 2026·2 min read

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani is working overtime to ensure that safety measures are not implemented to protect Jewish New Yorkers from rabid, Jew-hating protesters.

Two bills, similar in scope to each other, passed the City Council. One made it through with a veto-proof majority, so Mamdani had no choice but to accept it. The other, though nearly identical, only passed 30–19, earning the mayor’s veto.

The bill would have established “security perimeters” — buffer zones around schools — to protect students from “physical obstruction, physical injury, intimidation and interference” while “preserving and protecting the rights to free speech, assembly and protest.”

Mamdani defended his decision, saying that unions have flagged the bill as potentially restricting their abilities to organize. But the bill’s actual language provides for “preserving and protecting the rights to free speech and assembly, and protest, at educational facilities.”

“Ensuring students can enter and exit their schools without fear of harassment or intimidation should not be controversial,” said Julie Menin, the first Jewish speaker of the City Council.

Jewish groups fired back in a rare statement signed by 11 groups expressing their dismay over the veto. The signatories spanned the whole spectrum of Judaism, from Orthodox to secular, from the Orthodox Union to the Anti-Defamation League.

“We are deeply disappointed by Mayor Mamdani’s decision to veto Intro 175, legislation that would have required clear, coordinated safety plans around schools and learning institutions,” the statement said.

“Actions speak louder than words,” the statement added. “This veto is a profound failure of City Hall to demonstrate to all New Yorkers that our safety is a priority.”

The joint statement is rare for NYC’s divergent groups.

Morton Klein, president of the Zionist Organization of America, blasted Mamdani in an interview with an Israel-based media outlet.

This is “further proof that Mamdani is a heartless Jew-hating Israel-hater who doesn’t care about the safety of his New York City constituents if they’re Jewish,” he fumed.

“This is further proof that Mamdani actually supports Jews being harmed or attacked, as his previous repeated refusal to condemn people screaming ‘globalize the intifada,’ meaning kill the Jews, clearly showed,” Klein added. “In a time of surging Jew-hating, Israel-bashing, Mamdani is truly frightening.”

In country after country, it’s becoming less safe to be Jewish.
