DeSantis Unveils Aggressive New Florida Map That Could Hand GOP Four More Seats
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday introduced a proposed new congressional map that could deliver Republicans as many as four additional seats in the House, offsetting a recent redistricting outcome in Virginia that favored Democrats.
The plan would dismantle four Democratic-leaning districts across central and southern Florida, concentrating Democratic voters into a handful of heavily blue areas such as Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Orlando, and West Palm Beach.
The revised map, released by the governor’s office, outlines a dramatic shift in the state’s political landscape, with 25 districts leaning Republican and just three favoring Democrats.
“Florida got shortchanged in the 2020 Census, and we’ve been fighting for fair representation ever since,” DeSantis said in a statement to Fox News Digital, which first reported on the new map. “Our population has since grown dramatically, and we have moved from a Democrat majority to a 1.5 million Republican advantage. Drawing maps based on race, which is reflected in our current congressional districts, is unconstitutional and should be prohibited.”
DeSantis has also called a special legislative session set to begin Tuesday, where lawmakers are expected to take up the proposed redistricting plan.
