Apr 27, 2026·2 min read

A prominent member of the Belz chassidic community from Boro Park in New York, has been brutally murdered while on a trip to Colombia, sending shockwaves through the Chassidic community.

Nuchem Yisroel Eber, 51, disappeared shortly after arriving in the South American country, prompting a frantic search by family, community activists, and local authorities. Days later, the worst fears were confirmed when his body was discovered in a remote area, showing signs of extreme violence.

Investigators in Colombia believe Eber was targeted by a criminal group in what appears to have been a robbery. He was killed at the scene, and those responsible fled.

Eber’s sudden disappearance triggered an international effort to locate him, with growing concern as time passed without contact. The discovery of his body has now turned that concern into grief.

He leaves behind his immediate family and 16 siblings spread across Belz communities in the United States, Canada, and Israel.

Friends and relatives describe Eber as a deeply devoted and kind individual, known for setting aside time each day for Torah study and for his strong connection to the Belzer Rebbe.

Efforts are now underway to ensure proper burial, with Jewish representatives in Colombia working alongside international organizations and U.S.-based activists to handle arrangements.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the murder, as community leaders push for swift justice.

Funeral details will be shared once finalized. May his memory be a blessing.
