Iran Embassy In London Sparks Alarm With “Martyrdom” Campaign Targeting UK Iranians
A report by the Daily Mail says Iran’s embassy in London has called on Iranians living in the UK to sign up for an official “martyrdom” initiative, raising serious concerns among security officials about potential risks.
Consular staff reportedly issued a message encouraging “proud Iranian compatriots residing in Britain” to join the “Jan Fada” (“sacrificing life”) program. The appeal called on “brave and noble children of Iran” to enlist as a demonstration of “solidarity, loyalty, and national zeal.” A Farsi message shared on the embassy’s Telegram channel stated: “Let us all, to a man, give our bodies to be slain; for it is better than giving our country to the enemy.”
The campaign, which began last month, was described by an embassy spokesman as non-hostile. However, similar efforts are now being examined in Australia, and security analysts told the Daily Mail the initiative presents a “significant” threat.
UK authorities have been approached for comment as members of the Iranian diaspora urged action. Roger Macmillan, a former security director at Iran International, said the effort amounts to online radicalization within Britain and could push individuals to act on behalf of the regime.
He cautioned that the campaign may extend beyond Iranians to include sympathetic individuals, describing it as a dangerous escalation. Dr. Nadeh Fallah of the Iranian Human Rights and Allies group called the development “deeply alarming,” and urged the UK government to formally designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, arguing it is actively working to recruit and expand its influence in the country.
Responding to the criticism, a spokesman for the Iranian Embassy in London said: “‘Iranians around the world have always cared deeply about their homeland and the protection of its territorial integrity and they always will. ‘The “Jan Fada” platform is intended for all Iranians who wish to support and defend their country, and it does not promote any form of hostility.”
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has recently pledged to classify the IRGC as a terrorist organization, though no formal legislation has yet been introduced, despite mounting concern over Iran-linked activities in the UK.
