PRAYERS TO PUNCHES: Man Choked, Thrown in Synagogue Attack
A Jewish man leaving Adas Torah, an Orthodox synagogue in Los Angeles, was jumped and thrown to the ground Monday evening, reported Israeli Consul General to the Pacific Southwest Israel Bachar.
“This week, a Jewish man exited Adas Torah Synagogue and was violently assaulted by an attacker yelling ‘free Palestine,'” Bachar wrote on X. “This is the SAME synagogue that came under attack by protestors in June 2024 upon which it was determined that a ‘buffer zone’ was necessary to protect Jewish institutions. Nearly two years later, that ‘buffer zone’ has yet to be enacted.”
“This morning, I specifically attended prayers at Adas Torah to make clear: We will never allow hate to win. We must ensure that good triumphs over antisemitism’s evils,” he added.
Police took a report that night regarding a hate crime and felony battery at the synagogue.
The police have not yet identified whether the victim is Jewish, and the investigation is ongoing — but security footage shows a man in a hoodie stop his car, leap out and attack a man in traditional Orthodox garb. He throws the man violently to the ground before driving away.
David Englin, senior Los Angeles regional director at the Anti-Defamation League, told an Israeli outlet that the footage circulating online matches the victim’s story, with whom he spoke.

“The victim was leaving synagogue through a back entrance, and he’s dressed in traditional Jewish dress, so very obviously Jewish,” Englin said. “The attacker kind of rolled up in a vehicle, and they had some sort of brief conversation through the window of the vehicle.”
“Then the guy jumped out of the vehicle and jumped him and pushed him against the wall and was kind of choking him on the neck,” he added. The victim “fought back and that ultimately caused the attacker to leave, but he’s pretty shaken up.”
Englin said that the ADL is in “close contact” with both the victim and the police and expects the suspect to be caught soon.
