Mamdani Demands Flotilla Release Despite Israeli Assurances

May 1, 2026·2 min read

NYC’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani, demanded the release of New Yorkers who participated in the Gaza flotilla and were detained by Israel Thursday.

He joins the rest of the international community in feigning outrage and demanding the release of the activists, which Israel had repeatedly said it would do — and which it did indeed do, transferring the flotilla folks to Greece the day following his pronouncement.

He further declared that Israel had violated international law by intercepting flotilla boats and detaining the activists.

Last night, Israeli forces intercepted and boarded a humanitarian aid flotilla bound for Gaza in international waters off the coast of Greece — unlawfully detaining more than 175 people, including several New Yorkers.

“Last night, Israeli forces intercepted and boarded a humanitarian aid flotilla bound for Gaza in international waters off the coast of Greece — unlawfully detaining more than 175 people, including several New Yorkers,” he posted on X. “My team has been in direct contact with State and Federal partners as we work to confirm the whereabouts and conditions of these New Yorkers.”

“This is a brazen violation of international law. Those detained must be released,” he declared.

This follows Mamdani’s pattern of making up international laws and accusing people of breaking them. For example, he said that synagogues in New York that host pro-Israel events promoting aliyah are violating international law.

President Donald Trump begs to differ. He called the flotilla “pro-Hamas” and urged the ports of other countries to deny access and logistical support to boats that participated in the movement. Because Hamas is a designated terrorist organization, he said that legal action should be taken against the flotilla members.

Along with Mamdani, European countries have also called the interception of the flotilla a violation of international law, though they did not specify what international law prohibits the interception of vessels attempting to breach a lawful blockade.
