ALERT: Verrazzano Bridge, Battery Tunnel Closed During Five Boro Bike Tour
By BoroPark24 Staff
The MTA is advising motorists to prepare for significant travel disruptions today as closures and detours take effect on major crossings, including the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and the Hugh L. Carey (Battery) Tunnel, in connection with the Five Boro Bike Tour.
According to officials, the Staten Island–bound lower level of the Verrazzano Bridge will be closed from 12:01 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., while the upper level will remain open in both directions. Several ramps and exits connected to the bridge will also be shut through the day, further impacting traffic flow.
At the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, commonly known as the Battery Tunnel, key exits will be closed for hours at a time, including the westbound Gowanus/BQE exit in Brooklyn and the Trinity Place exit in Manhattan, with traffic being diverted to alternate routes.
With more than 30,000 cyclists expected to participate, officials are urging drivers to expect delays, allow for extra travel time, or use alternate routes, while encouraging the public to rely on mass transit where possible.
