Report Warns Of Hezbollah Threat To Meron Celebrations

May 3, 2026·1 min read

Israel believes Hezbollah is preparing to launch rockets toward the Meron area during Lag Baomer festivities, according to a report aired Sunday evening by Kan News, as heightened tensions continue surrounding the planned events.

Even though the main celebration at the kever of Rebbe Shimon bar Yochai has been called off, police are bracing for the possibility that extremist groups may still attempt to reach the area and clash with security forces. Officials are preparing for scenarios that could involve violence, including the potential use of tear gas.

As part of the security response, police have reached out to multiple bus companies, instructing them not to operate transportation to Meron. Authorities expect roads to be blocked, preventing access to the mountain and surrounding areas.

Separately, the three lighting ceremonies that had been scheduled for Monday may also be canceled due to severe weather conditions. Forecasts indicate that evening winds could reach speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour, raising additional safety concerns.

Under the revised plan, only three lightings were initially approved this year – a major significant reduction from the usual 19 – with attendance capped at approximately 200 participants.
