We regret to inform you of the passing of Reb Shaya Hershkowitz, a humble giant who is described as "a selfless individual who did not live for himself but for the Ribbono shel Olam." He was 89 years of age and lived a life of chessed.
Reb Shaya was a legend in the Sfardishe Shul in Boro Park, and one of the heads of the Chevra Kaddisha of Bikur Cholim of Boro Park. In these capacities, he gave himself away for Yidden with his whole heart, devoting his days and nights to chessed.
"He would run in middle of the night for chevra kaddisha calls," remembers one admirer. "He was one of the first in Shul every morning, beginning his day in the wee hours of the morning with shiurei Torah, many of which he helped organize."
He was also in charge of the Sfardishe Shul's gemach, and helped organize many aspects of the shul's functioning with valiant devotion.
He will be remembered for many years to come as a legend of chessed who devoted his life to Hashem and to his fellow Yidden.
The levaya will take place this morning at 10:30 at Shomrei Hadas. To watch it live, click here.
