Pellet Gun Attack Outside Toronto Synagogue Sparks Fear of Escalating Violence
A driver in a passing vehicle shot pellets from a replica gun at three people standing outside a synagogue in Toronto Thursday evening. One of them sustained minor injuries.
Toronto Police posted the incident as occurring at 10:49 p.m. in the area of Bathurst Street and Highway 401.
“This is being investigated as a suspected hate-motivated offence,” police stated. Police requested the public’s assistance in finding the perpetrator.
Police are investigating to find out whether the incident is related to similar ones in the past week.
Jewish advocates reacted with fear to the latest in a string of attacks on Jews and Jewish institutions in Toronto.
“How long before shooting ‘replica guns’ at Jews turns into shooting real guns at Jews?” demanded Aviva Klompas, a well-known Jewish advocate.
Dahlia Kurtz, a journalist and podcaster, snarked on X, “This is the third time in a week Jewish people have been the target of a shooting. I’m sure it’s because of the evil Canadians who visit America and choose USA-made products. Shabbat Shalom!”
“Three people were just shot with a pellet gun outside of a synagogue in Toronto,” posted Hen Mazzig, another well-known Jewish advocate. “Stronger than the average BB gun, pellet guns aren’t toys for children. They are even used in hunting small animals. It’s assault, plain and simple. And it is happening outside of a synagogue. Officials are even wondering if it’s related to a similar incident.”
“The hate in Canada is out of control,” he concluded.
