Haredi Protesters Block Jerusalem Light Rail as Police Move to Restore Order
Police classified a protest Sunday as a public disturbance and ordered demonstrators to clear out as Haredi protesters came out in force to decry the arrest of a draft dodger, blocking the Jerusalem light rail.
After protesters reportedly refused to comply, Israel Police officers from the Jerusalem District and Border Police officers attempted to clear the area and restore order.
One man was arrested for disturbing public order, according to police, who said that they would do nothing to impede the free expression of speech and legal protests but would not allow the “blatant violation of public order” that disrupts freedom of movement.
Sunday’s protest followed several others last week, in which police used water cannons, at times filled with blue dye, to disperse the protesters.
