A large emergency response unfolded Sunday afternoon at a home near the intersection of 17th Avenue and 55th Street after an emotionally disturbed individual barricaded himself inside the residence, prompting a heavy NYPD presence in the area.

Initial reports of a possible hostage situation drew a significant response from NYPD, FDNY, and EMS units, however authorities later determined there were no hostages involved. After tense moments at the scene, officers safely removed the individual from the home without incident or injuries.

Following the removal of the barricaded individual, NYPD conducted a precautionary search inside the residence and discovered a suspicious package. Out of an abundance of caution, the NYPD Bomb Squad was requested to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation of the item.
