As temperatures start climbing across New York City, mosquito season is quickly settling in with the familiar buzzing and itchy bites many residents know too well.
A new study from Terminix, a nationwide pest control company that tracks service data across the country, ranks New York City as the worst city in the U.S. for mosquitoes in 2025. The ranking is based on actual service calls and activity reported by its local branches.
Warm weather, high humidity, and standing water create the perfect conditions for mosquitoes to breed. New York State as a whole also ranked eighth nationwide.
Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely. The New York City Department of Health carries out routine spraying across the boroughs each year to reduce the risk of West Nile virus. In 2025 alone, over 1,000 mosquito samples in the city tested positive for the virus.
West Nile virus spreads through infected mosquito bites. Most cases are mild, but symptoms can include fever, headaches, body aches, fatigue, and in some cases stomach issues or rash.
Mosquito season in New York City typically runs from April 1 through October 31, meaning this is just the beginning of what could be a long and uncomfortable stretch.
