Degel HaTorah to Dlssolve Knesset After Failing to Deliver Giyus Law

May 12, 2026·2 min read
Rav Dov Lando has instructed the Degel HaTorah faction of UTJ to work toward dissolving the Knesset, citing a complete loss of trust in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the failure to pass legislation exempting yeshiva students from military service.

The statement followed a meeting with party MKs at his home in Bnei Brak, Rav Lando declared that “the concept of a right-wing bloc no longer exists” from the perspective of his faction.

The dispute centers on the long-delayed “giyus law,” after Netanyahu reportedly told Haredi lawmakers the coalition currently lacks enough support to pass the exemption legislation.

Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly told ultra-Orthodox parties that the coalition lacks enough support to pass the military draft law because of party primaries, possible early elections, and coalition rebels, Amit Segal reports.

While Degel HaTorah alone does not have enough votes to force new elections, support from Shas and the Hasidic Agudat Yisrael faction could threaten the coalition’s survival. Elections are currently scheduled no later than October 2026, though Charedi parties are reportedly pushing for an earlier vote in September.

Text of letter from Rav Dov Landau to the Knesset members of Degel HaTorah

“Honorable  Members of Knesset of Degel HaTorah, shlita

You have fulfilled your mission faithfully, above and beyond. We have no trust in the Prime Minister; we no longer feel we are his partners. We are not committed to him. From this point onward, we will do only what we believe is good for yahadus Hacharedis, and in our opinion elections should be held as soon as possible. All kinds of talk about a political bloc no longer exist.
With pain and deep concern,
Dov Lando
