Suspect in London Synagogue Arson Case Linked to Iraqi Phone Number, Prosecutors Say

May 12, 2026·1 min read

A man charged in an arson attack on a former synagogue in London last week allegedly had ties to someone using an Iraqi number, prosecutors said.

The 45-year-old suspect, identified as Moses Edwards, appeared in Westminster Magistrates’ Court Tuesday. He is being held in custody until his next hearing. Meanwhile, there is no indication that he has entered any plea.

A 52-year-old woman was also arrested but was later released on bail.

The building, formerly the East London Central Synagogue, still bears a Star of David on its façade. It was recently purchased by a Muslim group for the purpose of turning it into a mosque and an Islamic community center.

The suspect allegedly placed wine bottles filled with accelerant near the building, which exploded, damaging the building’s exterior. Police called to the scene found minor damage to the locks and gate.

The attack follows a wave of arson attacks targeting Jewish institutions and businesses in London. In April, attacks targeted on the Finchley Reform Synagogue, the Kenton United Synagogue, a Jewish shop and a previously Jewish-owned business, followed by a stabbing at a bus stop in Golders Green that injured two men.
