BREAKING: U.S. And Iran Reportedly Reach Preliminary Deal To Extend Ceasefire As Nuclear Talks Loom

May 28, 2026·2 min read

The United States and Iran have reportedly reached a tentative understanding that would extend the current ceasefire for 60 days while opening the door to fresh negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, according to multiple officials familiar with the talks.

Sources involved in the mediation efforts told Axios that negotiators from both sides finalized the framework of a memorandum of understanding earlier this week. However, the agreement has not yet received final approval from President Donald Trump, and Iran has also not publicly confirmed that it has officially accepted the proposal.

If signed, the agreement would mark the most significant diplomatic development since the conflict erupted and could temporarily ease fears of a wider regional war.

According to U.S. officials, the proposed arrangement is designed mainly to create space for broader negotiations rather than resolve the nuclear dispute itself.

“This is about getting everyone into serious negotiations,” one U.S. official reportedly said. “The harder issues would still need to be worked out over time.”

Behind closed doors, American officials say most of the terms had already been settled by Tuesday, though approval from top leadership on both sides was still required before any public announcement could move forward.

U.S. officials claim Iranian representatives later informed mediators they had obtained the necessary internal approvals and were prepared to proceed. Tehran has not independently confirmed those claims.

The framework was then presented to President Trump, who reportedly declined to immediately authorize the deal.

According to one official, Trump told mediators he wanted additional time to review the proposal before making a final decision.

American officials also suggested the agreement could present Iran with an opportunity to stabilize its struggling economy if negotiations move forward successfully.

“There are people inside Iran who understand this could be a chance to move the country in another direction,” one official said, adding that the next 60 days would reveal whether Tehran is genuinely interested in pursuing that path.
