Trump’s Birthday Bash at the White House Features UFC and Controversy

Jun 14, 2026·2 min read

In honor of his 80th birthday, President Donald Trump is hosting a mixed martial arts event at the White House. The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Octagon, an eight-sided 92-foot-high wire mesh cage nicknamed “The Claw,” has been erected on the White House’s South Lawn and will house a series of mixed martial arts fights within view of the president’s bedroom to the tune of $1 million per ticket. The cage is emblazoned with the sign UFC Freedom 250 in a reference to the 250th year of American independence and Trump’s effort to tie his birthday to the country’s semiquincentennial.

Breaking with past norms by hosting a private company’s event on federal grounds, Trump is scheduled to watch 14 martial arts fighters from five countries compete in seven matches before an expected audience of about 4,000 people. The splashy birthday performance comes amid a backdrop of rising tensions between the United States and Iran as the two countries grapple with peace deal negotiations amid skyrocketing consumer prices in the U.S.

The event drew a legal challenge by those arguing that the president had exceeded his authority in staging such an event without obtaining congressional authorization, but the challenge failed when a judge refused to block the event from going forward. A Reuters poll showed that just 16% of adults approved of the event amid concerns about the costs such an event would incur.

Trump enjoys a close relationship with UFC CEO Dana White and the Ellisons, who have been longtime supporters of Trump’s campaigns. UFC said that while the event cost more than $60 million, it’s not making a profit.

The matches are scheduled to begin Monday at 4 p.m. Eastern Daylight Saving Time.
