Meet Matt Turner, the Only Jewish Player on Team USA in the World Cup

Jun 14, 2026·3 min read

Matt Turner has become one of the more familiar names in American soccer over the past few years. From his rise in Major League Soccer to becoming the U.S. Men’s National Team’s starting goalkeeper at the 2022 World Cup, he’s built a reputation as a steady presence in goal when the pressure is at its highest.

Now, as he returns to the World Cup stage with Team USA, there’s another part of his story that has started to get attention. Turner is believed to be the only Jewish player on the U.S. roster for the tournament.

Turner grew up in New Jersey and, for most of his early life, didn’t really have a strong connection to the Jewish side of his background. It wasn’t something that was talked about much at home or part of his day-to-day identity growing up.

That began to change when his family started looking into their history more seriously and came across records tied to his paternal great-grandmother. She fled Lithuania during the Holocaust era before eventually rebuilding her life in the United States. The records connected to his family trace back to Lithuania in the early 1940s, during a time when the country’s Jewish communities were being destroyed under Nazi occupation, particularly in major centers like Vilnius, where centuries of Jewish life were wiped out in just a few years.

On the field, his journey has been anything but straightforward. Turner wasn’t a highly-considered prospect coming out of college, and he went undrafted in MLS. But through hard work and persistence, he worked his way up the ranks, eventually earning the starting role for the U.S. national team. His performances at the 2022 World Cup helped cement his place on the international stage, with key saves that kept the U.S. competitive in big moments.

He played college soccer at Fairfield University, where he developed into a standout goalkeeper after initially being overlooked, eventually earning recognition in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference before making the jump to the professional level.

Since then, he’s remained part of the national team picture and continues to be relied on in major matches. Now, with another World Cup underway on home soil, Turner finds himself back under that same kind of spotlight. The expectations are high, the stakes are even higher, and every moment matters.

But beyond the soccer side of it, there’s also that quieter layer to his story – one that ties him back to his family’s past. In a tournament filled with global stars and nonstop attention, his journey stands out in a more understated way.

It’s not just about where he is now on the field. For Turner, part of the story is also about where his family came from, and how those roots still echo in the present.
