UK: Two people have been arrested in London on suspicion of assisting Iran’s intelligence service, the Metropolitan Police has said. A 42-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man were detained by Counter Terrorism Policing London as part of an investigation into suspected offences under the National Security Act. Both have since been released on bail under strict conditions until late October. Police said the investigation is not connected to incidents or attacks earlier this year targeting venues and buildings linked to Jewish and Iranian communities across London.

UK: Primark is set to launch home delivery for the first time, ending years of resistance to selling its low-cost clothing online for delivery. The retailer, which currently offers Click & Collect, has taken over a highly automated distribution centre in Sheffield in a £90 million deal to support the move. Home delivery will be available across England, Scotland and Wales, although Primark has not yet announced when the service will launch.

UK: Mayors and local leaders across England are to be given powers to impose a new “tourist tax” on overnight stays in hotels, B&Bs and Airbnb-style accommodation. The levy will be charged as a percentage of the cost of accommodation, with local leaders able to decide whether to introduce it and how much to charge. The government is not expected to impose a national cap, although London and some other areas are expected to keep the levy at no more than 5%. The government says the money could be reinvested in transport, high streets and public spaces, while the hospitality industry has warned the move could cost thousands of jobs.

Yemen: Iran-backed Houthi forces have reportedly seized the strategic Yemeni port city of Mocha, Yemeni government sources have said. According to witnesses, rebel forces entering the city while chanting “Death to America, death to Israel.” The advance brings the Houthis closer to controlling the approaches to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s most important shipping routes, raising fears of further disruption to global trade and energy supplies.

US: President Donald Trump has pledged to give each American adult a $5,000 payment if Republicans win control of both chambers of Congress in November’s midterm elections. There are nearly 270 million American adults, which means a the plan would cost the US government some $1.3 trillion. Trump announced the plan during a speech at the Republican Party’s first-ever midterm convention, but offered few details about how it would be funded or implemented, other than saying the money would have to be spent in the US. Democrats dismissed the proposal as an “empty promise”, while questions have also been raised over the legality of such a pledge.

Tech: Apple has revealed its first folding smartphone, the iPhone Duo, at its annual launch event in California. The new phone sets the record as the most expensive iPhone to be released, starting at £1,999 and priced up to £3,199 if you want extra storage. It is available from Oct 23, with pre-order a week earlier, on Oct 16. Apple chief executive John Ternus, who took over as CEO from Tim Cook last week, unveiled the US tech firm’s latest smartphone alongside the traditional-sized iPhone 18 Pro and other gadgets at its “Surprise and Shine” event. Other gadgets revealed include new AirPods headphones and a pair of new Apple Watches.

UK: Reform UK leader Nigel Farage spoke by phone with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, who thanked him for his party’s support for Israel and opposition to the Government’s sanctions on Israeli settlements. According to Sa’ar, Farage assured him that a Reform UK government “would reverse the damage done to the UK-Israel relationship by the Labour Government and its policies.”

UK: Nigel Farage has called for a nationwide ban on all full-face coverings in public, including those worn for religious reasons such as burqas and niqabs, saying Reform UK would introduce the measure if it came to power. Farage said facial coverings were "not the British way" and undermined the trust needed for a "free and open society". The call follows recent anti-migrant protests in Dover and Portsmouth in which large numbers of demonstrators wore balaclavas.
