The police are adopting a tougher stance in the face of the riots. Based on footage emerging from the streets and reports from France over the last few days, it appears there has been a significant shift in how the police are handling the wave of protests and unrest. Following criticism regarding a loss of control last week, security forces are now acting more aggressively and swiftly: conducting more charges and forceful dispersals, making extensive use of tear gas and water cannons—and, most notably, carrying out far more arrests. During yesterday’s demonstrations alone, nearly 1,000 people were arrested across France, as approximately 70,000 police officers were deployed.
