NYCEM Issues Hazardous Travel Advisory for Sunday Through Monday Ahead of Blizzard
NEW YORK (VINnews) — New York City Emergency Management has issued a hazardous travel advisory from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening as forecasters warn of a major winter storm expected to bring 12 to 20 inches of snow, strong winds and coastal flooding to the city.
The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning beginning 1 p.m. Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday. The heaviest snowfall is expected between late Sunday night and Monday morning, with rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour and reduced visibility due to blowing and drifting snow.
Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani said city agencies are activating emergency protocols and urged residents to avoid nonessential travel. Sanitation crews are preparing a full deployment of plows and salt spreaders, while transportation officials are monitoring road conditions.
NYCEM Commissioner Christina Farrell said the storm could create “dangerous travel conditions” and encouraged residents to stay informed, sign up for Notify NYC alerts and check on neighbors who may need assistance.
Wind gusts of up to 55 mph, with isolated gusts reaching 60 mph, could cause scattered power outages. Minor coastal flooding is likely Sunday night, with potential moderate flooding in vulnerable areas including Jamaica Bay, Staten Island and Lower Manhattan.
Alternate Side Parking will be suspended Monday. Public transit riders are advised to monitor updates from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority for possible service disruptions.
NYCEM’s Emergency Operations Center will be activated Sunday morning to coordinate the city’s response. The Tow Truck Task Force and Downed Trees Task Force are also on standby.
Officials reminded property owners that they are responsible for clearing sidewalks adjacent to their property within required timeframes after snowfall ends. Pushing snow into streets or bike lanes is prohibited.
The city has opened warming centers in all five boroughs, with additional warming buses and facilities available. Residents can find locations and updates through 311 or the Notify NYC system.
Authorities are urging New Yorkers to remain indoors if possible, prepare for potential power outages, secure outdoor property and avoid flooded areas. Residents in basement apartments and coastal zones are advised to take additional precautions and prepare emergency “Go Bags.”
