NEW YORK (VINnews) — One of the people accused of pelting New York Police Department officers with snowballs during a chaotic incident in Washington Square Park has been identified as 27-year-old Gusmane Coulibaly, authorities said Thursday.

Coulibaly was arrested in connection with the February 23 confrontation that left two officers hospitalized. Police said he was previously arrested for attempted robbery in the subway less than three weeks ago. Three other suspects remain at large.

The NYPD released surveillance images of Coulibaly and the other participants, and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the attack as “criminal” and “disgraceful.” The Police Benevolent Association criticized Mayor Zohran Mamdani for previously downplaying the incident as a group of kids throwing snowballs.

“A 27-year-old is not a ‘kid,’” the union said in a social media post, noting the arrest sends a clear message that assaulting officers is unacceptable. Mamdani had insisted in previous comments that the participants were “kids,” despite video showing adult involvement.
