TEHRAN (VINnews) — Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was reported killed Saturday in targeted strikes in Tehran, according to Iranian media outlets, though there was no immediate official confirmation from Iranian authorities.

The Iranian Labour News Agency, known as ILNA, reported that a strike hit the Narmak neighborhood in eastern Tehran, a middle-class district where Ahmadinejad was believed to reside. The report said he was killed along with members of his security detail.

Iranian officials had not publicly confirmed the former president’s death as of Saturday afternoon, and independent verification was not immediately possible.

Ahmadinejad served as Iran’s president from 2005 to 2013, a period marked by escalating tensions with the West over Iran’s nuclear program and inflammatory rhetoric toward Israel. During his presidency, he repeatedly questioned or denied the Holocaust and called for Israel to be eliminated, statements that drew widespread international condemnation.

In the years after leaving office, Ahmadinejad’s political influence declined. He at times clashed with Iran’s ruling establishment and was barred from running in subsequent presidential elections.

The reported strike came amid heightened regional tensions following military operations involving Israel and the United States. Iranian state media have reported explosions in parts of Tehran, but details about specific targets and casualties remain limited.

Authorities in Tehran have not said whether they will issue a formal statement regarding Ahmadinejad’s reported death.
