NEWBURGH, N.Y. – A Cessna 172 carrying two people crashed into the Hudson River east of Stewart International Airport shortly after 8 p.m. Monday, officials said.

Authorities described the incident as a “mini Miracle on the Hudson” after the plane performed an emergency ice landing near Newburgh. First responders from Middle Hope, Newburgh, and Storm King fire departments quickly located the aircraft. The pilot and passenger were able to escape and swim to shore.

Both occupants were evaluated at the scene before being transported to a local hospital. Gov. Kathy Hochul said they sustained only minor injuries and are expected to make a full recovery.

The aircraft, owned by American Airman, Inc., had departed McArthur Airport on Long Island and was practicing landings at Stewart Airport. No other people were on board.

The Federal Aviation Administration and State Police are investigating the crash.
