NYC Mayor Criticized for Tepid Response After Pro-muslim Protester Throws Explosive Device Outside Gracie Mansion

Mar 8, 2026·3 min read

NEW YORK (VINnews) — New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani on Sunday condemned a protest outside Gracie Mansion, where authorities say a pro-Muslim demonstrator threw an explosive device. The mayor described the protest as “rooted in bigotry and racism” but offered little beyond a general statement of condemnation.

“Such hate has no place in New York City. It is an affront to our city’s values and the unity that defines who we are,” Mamdani wrote on X, adding that the violence that followed was “even more disturbing.”

Critics say the mayor’s response fell short of addressing the seriousness of the incident, which is under active investigation by law enforcement.

Yesterday, white supremacist Jake Lang organized a protest outside Gracie Mansion rooted in bigotry and racism. Such hate has no place in New York City. It is an affront to our city’s values and the unity that defines who we are.

What followed was even more disturbing. Violence…

So @ZohranKMamdani calls Jake Lang a White Supremacist but he won’t describe who threw the bomb at Jake:

A Muslim jihadist Mamdami supporter.

White people founded our country, @ZohranKMamdani, & Muslims like you have never been a part of America’s founding.

Go back to Uganda! https://t.co/DIGPoUxJ3I

You are an anti-Semitic, anti-American ghoul who has no problem with political violence as long as it's directed towards Jews.

You support Hamas and their terrorist atrocities and have no moral authority on this or any topic. https://t.co/wxJPlYofBD

Hey @NYCMayor Zohran Mamdani:
Jake Lang’s views are reprehensible. But facts still matter. The bombs were planted by Muslim counter-protesters, not the protesters themselves, something you conveniently left out. https://t.co/j0co39p0uD

What a horrible statement. If you want to condemn violence, don't weave in a condemnation of the victim's politics.

Oh, and Kwame's politics are more bigoted and hateful than anything Lang can be. https://t.co/ixhp4VyyPT

Yesterday; 2 Muslim TERRORISTS threw a NAILBOMB at me during my protest. This was an attempted assassination Jihad.

They screamed ALLAH AKBAR and tried to murder dozens of White Christians who were peacefully protesting the Islamification of NYC

Seems like you had stronger… https://t.co/WjVd4Dpr1z

Mr @NYCMayor. If you want credibility and the citizens of NYC to trust you – describe all the bad actors and their actions accordingly. This statement was written for you with a bias towards one well described bad actor but the second one was not. Moreover, you can’t wait 20+… https://t.co/0BNRjPIh9p
