NYC Mayor Faces Online Fury Over Iftar Dinner With Pro-Palestinian Activist
NEW YORK — Thousands of users took to X (formerly Twitter) to vent anger and frustration at Zohran Mamdani, the mayor of New York City, after he hosted an Iftar dinner Monday night at Gracie Mansion with pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil.
Khalil has been involved in pro-Palestinian campus protests and advocacy efforts in the United States, drawing criticism from opponents who accuse him of supporting groups hostile to Israel, allegations he and supporters deny.
The event held at City Hall came the same day federal authorities announced charges against two men accused of throwing an explosive device at police during a weekend protest in the city. Prosecutors said the suspects allegedly pledged allegiance to the militant group Islamic State (ISIS).
Many social media users blasted the mayor over the timing of the dinner, with some calling for his resignation and others demanding he be deported along with Khalil.
City Hall did not immediately respond to the criticism. Authorities said the investigation into the bombing incident remains ongoing.
Mamdani, who is Muslim, has drawn widespread criticism in recent days, particularly after it emerged that his wife, Rama Duwaji, liked multiple social media posts celebrating Hamas’s October 7 attacks, sparking outrage across political and social media platforms.
Below are examples of some of the X posts:
In a normal world, this is who the Mayor of New York City would have hosted for dinner at his home, instead of a man who sympathizes with the folks throwing the bomb. https://t.co/EkDyfg3UwR

Petitions do nothing. Move two city council members to impeach him. We probably have one already. https://t.co/oWRff2kY2b

I'm reposting this to remind everyone why Mahmoud Khalil doesn't belong in our country, let alone dining with the mayor of New York City in Gracie Mansion. https://t.co/sA5MZhnrKF

Where is Rama’s hijab? Why is she allowed to wear a short shirt exposing her stomach in the presence of another man and his wife? Thats against the Quran! That is not a real Iftar dinner. You’re pissing off your Muslim buddies! They’re calling you and your wife frauds! https://t.co/x20FQ6Anlj

Random juice jar on the Gracie Mansion table. Mayor's wife with exposed navel on what is supposed to be a very important Muslim holy day (and holy breaking of the fast). Islam sees modesty in dress as being linked to spiritual purity. More physical chemistry between these two… pic.twitter.com/40tcBNGcm5

Never forget @NYCMayor Mamdani’s inner circle.
Mamdani just posted about hosting Mahmoud Khalil at Gracie Mansion.
Khalil supports Hamas. Apparently he’s in good company – so does the First Lady of NYC.

Zohran Mamdani, @NYCMayor, says his wife is a “private person.”
But she didn’t simply like a post.
She liked what happened on October 7.
She helped spread blood libel.
And she stood with terrorists.
That’s not private — not in a city with nearly a million Jews.

Rep. Fine (R-FL) on NYC Mayor Mamdani: “I have one word: deport…Mamdani hates America…is covering for Muslim terrorists he supports, whether it’s in the Middle East or it’s in America. He should be stripped of his citizenship and he should be deported.”pic.twitter.com/nuh9mtUsJY

The post is disgraceful and yet so entirely unsurprising.
Mamdani describes Khalil as a victim of “cruelty” who was punished merely for exercising his First Amendment rights while protesting what he calls the “ongoing genocide in Palestine.”
What Mamdani does not mention is who… https://t.co/wcieXMi4jR

How does Mamdani respond to the plethora of evidence put forward showing his wife’s open support of the October 7th Massacre?
He invites a longstanding Hamas activist for dinner.
His contempt for Jews is public and unapologetic. https://t.co/JixoLBKVBl
