Iran’s Leadership In Disarray: President Pezeshkian Has No Contact With New Supreme Leader

Mar 11, 2026·4 min read

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — The president of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, has not been in contact with Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed on the first day of Operation Roaring Lion. Since Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed the new Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, there has been no clear knowledge about his current condition. This was reported by the media outlet IranWire.

On the eleventh day of the war between the United States and Israel against Iran, a knowledgeable source from within Iran commented on Mojtaba Khamenei’s leadership and his communication with Pezeshkian:

“We have no information about Mojtaba Khamenei’s status. Government ministers have no news about him, and as far as I know, Pezeshkian himself has had no contact at all with Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.”

According to the source, Pezeshkian’s government is currently in a state of “serious disorder” due to the ongoing wartime conditions. However, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are reportedly still operating with strong coordination.

This concern is especially significant because March 20 marks Nowruz, the Iranian New Year. Traditionally, government employees receive end-of-year bonuses along with their salaries at that time.

A government insider told IranWire:

“The government’s instability is so severe that it is unclear whether it will even be able to pay salaries to employees during Nowruz. We have a bleak Nowruz ahead of us.”

Since Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed Iran’s third Supreme Leader on March 8, 2026, no public photos, statements, or other announcements from him have yet been released. Sources connected to the state say he is expected to release a statement soon, though it is not clear whether it will come as a video message, an audio statement, or a written address.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Iranian army have reportedly sworn allegiance to the new Supreme Leader, according to Iranian media. In an official statement, the Revolutionary Guards said:

“We are ready to obey the orders of the Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, and even sacrifice ourselves for him.”

Minutes after the announcement of his appointment as the successor to the Supreme Leader, videos circulated on social media from Iran in which crowds could be heard shouting “Death to Khamenei” and “Death to the dictator.”

At the same time, another video from Tehran showed the moment the announcement of Mojtaba’s selection was presented to regime supporters in a central square in the city.

Mojtaba Khamenei is considered an extreme conservative, anti-Israeli and anti-Western even more than his father, and the preferred candidate of the Revolutionary Guards. According to various reports, Israel recently attempted to assassinate him, and he has not appeared in public since his father’s killing.

In addition, the Persian-language Mossad Twitter account posted a mysterious hint yesterday: “Why did Khamenei’s son burn his father’s will? You should check that.”

At the same time, a source involved in the matter told The Jerusalem Post that assessments suggest that although Mojtaba Khamenei was injured during the war, he is still capable of performing his duties and running state affairs as Iran’s new Supreme Leader.

This follows a report by Iranian state television that he had been injured, although no details were provided about the circumstances or severity of the injury. The report also did not state when the injury occurred or whether it affected his daily responsibilities.

Despite these reports, no recent photo of the new Iranian leader has yet been released.
