IDF Cancels Indictment Against 5 Soldiers Accused of Abusing Palestinian Detainee

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — The Israel Defense Forces’ top prosecutor has canceled an indictment against five reserve soldiers who had been accused of abusing a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman detention facility in 2024.

Itai Ofir, the military advocate general, ordered the charges withdrawn after reviewing developments in the case and the available evidence. The IDF said several factors led to the decision, including evidentiary complications, procedural issues in transferring investigative materials, and concerns that the circumstances could undermine the defendants’ right to a fair trial.

The detainee involved in the case was later released back to Gaza as part of a ceasefire arrangement in October 2025.

The case also drew attention after a surveillance video related to the investigation was leaked to media outlets. Former military advocate general Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi resigned following the leak, and additional officials in the legal division were suspended.

Eyal Zamir, the IDF chief of staff, was briefed on the decision and ordered a review of the handling of the case to prevent similar issues in the future, the military said.
