Blast, Fire Damage Rotterdam Synagogue; Four Young Suspects Arrested

Mar 13, 2026·2 min read

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands (VINnews) — Dutch police arrested four young men suspected of involvement in an explosion and fire outside a synagogue in Rotterdam that damaged the entrance of the building and briefly ignited flames, authorities said.

The blast occurred around 3:40 a.m. at a synagogue on A.B.N. Davidsplein in the Blijdorp neighborhood, police said. Authorities reported that a fire was started at the site but burned only briefly before extinguishing on its own. No injuries were reported.

Police said the suspects include two 19-year-olds, an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old. Investigators have not yet identified a motive and said a large-scale probe is underway.

After the explosion, officers increased patrols around synagogues and Jewish institutions across the city as a precaution. Police also stopped a vehicle near another synagogue after the driver matched the description of one of the suspects. Authorities said it remains unclear whether additional attacks had been planned.

Investigators are reviewing video circulating on social media that appears to show an explosion near the building.

Justice Minister David van Weel condemned the attack, saying the government would not tolerate antisemitism, intimidation or violence and that authorities were working to ensure the safety of Jewish institutions.

Rotterdam Mayor Carola Schouten said the incident caused significant anxiety among members of the Jewish community and stressed that hatred or violence targeting religious groups has no place in the city.

A representative of the synagogue said the physical damage — including scorched doors at the entrance — could be repaired, but the emotional impact on the Jewish community would likely last much longer.

The attack comes amid heightened tensions and a reported rise in antisemitic incidents following the outbreak of the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, which began Feb. 28 when the United States and Israel launched large-scale strikes on Iranian targets. Authorities across Europe have reported increased security concerns at Jewish institutions in recent weeks.

Earlier this week, an explosion also struck a synagogue in Liège, Belgium, in an incident authorities there described as antisemitic. Dutch police said the Rotterdam investigation remains ongoing and urged witnesses to come forward with information.
