Firefighters arriving at the scene encountered heavy fire on all three floors. During the response, a victim trapped on the second floor was rescued using a portable ladder, officials said.
As crews advanced inside, a stairwell collapsed, trapping two firefighters. They were later extricated and taken to area hospitals in stable condition.
Three victims, including a child, were found dead inside the building. A fourth person who had been transported to a hospital in critical condition later died, officials said. Two additional victims were taken to hospitals in critical condition, and several others were treated at the scene.
More than 230 firefighters and emergency medical personnel responded to the fire. Officials said firefighters also performed CPR on victims outside the building as rescue efforts continued.
“This is a difficult and tragic day,” said Lillian Bonsignore. “The Fire Department did an extraordinary job under difficult circumstances, putting this fire out and saving people.”
The fire was brought under control shortly before 2:45 p.m., officials said. Fire marshals are investigating the cause.
