Stranded and Still Waiting: Americans in Israel Search for a Way Home; HERE IS WHAT YOU CAN DO
For many American Citizens currently in Israel, the past days and weeks have been marked by uncertainty, long hours refreshing email inboxes, and constant conversations about possible routes home. Families, students, and visitors who expected to return to the United States without incident now find themselves navigating limited options and rapidly shifting policies.
“We packed our bags when we heard about the evacuation flights,” said David Miller, a university student visiting family. “We really thought that was it – that we’d be on a plane within a day or two.”
For a brief moment, it appeared there was light at the end of the tunnel.
When the United States announced that it would operate evacuation flights to bring American citizens home, many felt a wave of relief. Parents gathered passports and documents. Students rearranged plans. There was a sense that an orderly and reliable path out of the country was finally in place.
But that relief proved short-lived.
The evacuation flights quickly stopped, and the State Department announced a new arrangement – El Al would transport stranded Americans instead. On paper, it sounded like a practical solution that would stabilize the situation.
In reality, it has not unfolded that way.
Thus far, El Al has struggled to accommodate even its own ticketed passengers. Despite public statements indicating that non–El Al passengers would also be placed on flights, non–El Al passengers have yet been successfully ticketed or flown. Americans without existing El Al reservations remain in limbo.
“We keep hearing that seats will open up,” said Rachel Cohen, a mother of three trying to return home. “But so far, only people who already had El Al tickets are getting on, and not even all of those.. We’re still waiting.”
Beyond the inconvenience and uncertainty, there are also humanitarian cases that add urgency to the situation. Families have reported deaths back home requiring immediate travel. Others are facing serious medical situations, including individuals who need ongoing treatment in the United States or who must return urgently due to health emergencies involving close relatives. In ordinary circumstances, such cases would typically receive priority consideration. Yet many individuals in these categories report having no clear avenue for assistance and no confirmed access to a flight.
Departure options over the past 24–48 hours appear to have become even more limited, and identifying a viable, secure route home is increasingly difficult. For many, the promise of assistance has not yet translated into actual movement.
What You Can Do
If you are a U.S. citizen still trying to leave Israel, it is critical to make your situation known to the U.S. Department of State immediately. Increased outreach helps communicate the scale and urgency of the need for direct assistance – particularly for humanitarian and medical cases.
