Chicago Man Who Traveled to Florida Arrested for Alleged Synagogue Shooting Threat, Authorities Say
CHICAGO (VINnews) – A Chicago man who traveled to Florida was arrested there and charged in federal court after allegedly posting online threats targeting a Jewish synagogue and Jewish individuals, authorities said.
Investigators said Timothy Holmes, 31, not only made threats online but also sought and shared what he claimed was the U.S. address of relatives of an Israeli official and indicated he planned to travel to Florida — a trip authorities said was confirmed by airline records.
Holmes, a DePaul University graduate, is accused of using a social media account to post threats earlier this month, including a statement that he intended to carry out a shooting at a synagogue, according to a criminal complaint filed in the Northern District of Illinois.
Prosecutors said the posts were made in response to online developments involving Ali Khamenei and included additional antisemitic language.
The FBI opened an investigation after receiving information about the threats. Holmes was arrested in Florida and appeared in federal court the same day. A judge ordered his release on $100,000 bond with conditions including electronic monitoring, travel restrictions, and bans on possessing weapons and accessing social media.
Authorities emphasized that the charge is an allegation, and Holmes is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
