Orange County Executive Releases Video Showing Illegal School Bus Passing, Warns of $250 Fine

GOSHEN, N.Y. (VINnews) — Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus has released a public safety video showing multiple vehicles illegally passing stopped school buses, urging drivers to obey traffic laws and protect children.

The footage, captured by enforcement cameras mounted on school buses, shows motorists driving past buses with red lights flashing as students board or exit. Officials said the video is part of the county’s ongoing school safety efforts and is intended to raise awareness and deter violations.

“Protecting our children is a top priority,” Neuhaus said, adding that the technology helps hold reckless drivers accountable and reinforces the importance of stopping when school buses display red lights.

County officials said more than 1,000 buses across 14 school districts are now equipped with stop-arm cameras designed to document violations.

Authorities warned that under New York state law, drivers must stop for school buses with flashing red lights, regardless of direction of travel. Violations captured on camera carry a $250 fine for a first offense.

Emergency services officials said the number of violations recorded is “alarming,” with some incidents narrowly avoiding serious injury to students. They hope the video serves as both an educational tool and a deterrent to unsafe driving behavior.
