NEW YORK (VINnews) — One person was killed after a fire tore through the top floor of an apartment building in the Bronx early Thursday, fire officials said.
Firefighters responded around 5:30 a.m. to a report of a blaze on East 184th Street in the Belmont section. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy fire conditions on the top floor extending into the roof, making access difficult, according to fire officials.
Authorities said a person was found dead inside the apartment where the fire is believed to have started. The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
Four firefighters suffered minor injuries, including heat exhaustion and sprains. Officials said those injuries were not life-threatening.
The fire escalated to five alarms before being brought under control later in the morning. During the incident, part of the roof collapsed into the top floor, along with sections of the building’s cornice.
No other injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
