Lakewood Birth Surge Powers Ocean County’s Rapid Population Growth

Mar 27, 2026·2 min read

Ocean County’s fast-growing population is being driven largely by a dramatic rise in births centered in Lakewood, which now accounts for a notable share of all newborns in New Jersey.

Recent figures show that in 2025, a total of 5,354 babies were born in Lakewood, out of 99,708 births statewide—meaning the township alone was responsible for more than 5% of all births in New Jersey.

The scale of that number has positioned Lakewood as a dominant force in shaping demographic trends across the state, particularly as many other regions continue to see flat or declining birthrates.

The impact is being felt across Ocean County, which has emerged as one of the fastest-growing areas in New Jersey. Much of that growth is being fueled not by migration, but by natural population increase, driven by large families and a young population.

Lakewood’s demographic profile plays a central role in this trend. With a high concentration of young families, the township continues to generate thousands of births annually, creating sustained and accelerating growth.

That growth is no longer confined to Lakewood itself. Neighboring towns are now experiencing similar trends, as families expand outward into surrounding communities.

Jackson, Manchester, and Toms River have all seen significant increases in birthrates in recent years, reflecting both spillover from Lakewood and the broader expansion of the community throughout the region.
