Footage: Antisemitic Abuse Reported Against Hasidic Jews From Allegedly Stolen Car in Melbourne, Police Say
MELBOURNE, Australia (VINnews) — Police in Melbourne are investigating a series of incidents involving an allegedly stolen vehicle in which occupants reportedly directed antisemitic abuse at Hasidic Jewish pedestrians and threw eggs, authorities said.
Victoria Police said the black Hyundai sedan was reported stolen earlier in the week from a home in Caulfield and has since been linked to multiple erratic driving incidents across Melbourne’s southeastern suburbs, including Hampton, Ripponlea and Caulfield.
Footage circulating online shows the vehicle making an illegal turn at an intersection in the central business district while occupants shout abusive language toward pedestrians wearing Hasidic Jewish clothing.
A police spokesperson said, “Whilst some of the offensive language has included antisemitic behaviour, other incidents do not appear targeted to one community group.”
Authorities said the occupants have not yet been identified or interviewed. The vehicle reportedly fled the scene during each incident.
Police are reviewing multiple reports and video evidence and have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
The investigation is ongoing.
